FAQWhat is the difference between Digital and Offset Printing?

Offset Printing uses full colour (CMYK), Special Colours (PMS) and varnish inks on plates, to transfer images and text onto paper. Offset printing is high quality and cost effective for large sizes and print runs.

Digital printing on the other hand uses toner to print in full colour (CMYK) but not Special Colours (PMS). However, the benefit of digital printing is that for short runs it is much more economical as there are no set up costs such as plates. Digital printing is quicker as it can be printed without the time associated with setting up offset machines and the toner is already fused so it does not take long to dry. Digital printing also gives the advantage of allowing you to personalise your collateral with each individual piece tailored to the respondent.

As a general rule, larger quantities are more suited to offset printing and smaller quantities that are needed in a faster turnaround suit digital printing. Of course there are exceptions to the rule, talk to your Commerce Press representative to work out what is right for you.

Why is it best to use varnish matt paper stocks?

Applying a matt sealing varnish to uncoated and matt paper stocks helps reduce scuffing and marking so you get a better finished project.

What is the difference between aqueous varnish and normal varnish?

Aqueous varnish is water-base and dries hard to provide a protective matt or gloss coating. Conventional matt, satin and gloss varnishes are similar to ink and used mostly for sealing or to give a special design effect. Contact the Commerce Press team for samples of the many creative ways to use varnish to enhance your design.

Why does Commerce Press prefer artwork supplied as PDF?

Creating a PDF locks in the fonts, pictures and graphics; increasing the reliability of the artwork file. Commerce Press also accepts files in Indesign, QuarkXPress and Illustrator if you would prefer to supply your artwork in these formats.

Can Commerce Press personalise direct mail?

If you are looking to really reach your existing or potential clients and grab their attention, personalisation has been proven to achieve excellent results. Through digital printing, Commerce Press can personalise and tailor each piece of marketing collateral to the individual.
